Even if you were to pay for and install Fusion, the setup is pretty different than ESXi, and I don't think it would teach you anything that VirtualBox wouldn't.Running Windows on Mac is only the beginning.
Install something like VirtualBox and get a feel for the concept of virtualization. IMO the best thing to do would be to do one or both of the following: Unless your Mac is just killer, you're going to see some major performance hits. It is an OS, so Bootcamp wouldn't be terrible, but to run it on top of OSX, then to put another VM on top of that, you're 3 layers of virtualization deep. I've never done this, but it sounds like you could either do it from Bootcamp, or it might require wiping your machine and installing as the base OS. It looks like you can install it on a Mac: that might get you enough to play around with for a while.
